Candid Recording(s):
Biography:
Born in 1943, Kenny started on piano at age of 12 and was later tutored by a sister of Ray Bryant. He matured rapidly and after rhythm and blues experience was gigging with Philly Joe Jones at 16.
He made his recording debut with older brother Bill Barron, a fine tenor saxophonist, in 1961 and the following year joined Dizzy Gillespie. His compositional flair was evident as early as 1959 when he contributed an original and an arrangement to a Yusef Lateef album. He would later work with Yusef more regularly in the 1970s.
The cultured piano style of Kenny Barron has perceptively informed scores of albums during the past 35 years. Barron is highly valued for his musicianship and innate sensitivity for the needs of his musical companions of the moment.
On his Candid release (CCD 79508 – Lemuria-Seascape), Kenny is joined by bass player Ray Drummond, who's musicality has placed him at the forefront of jazz endeavors over the past decade. Drummer Ben Riley draws on a wealthy bank of more than 35 years experience when he gets behind his kit. His propulsive drive is matched by his sense of structure. Another element shared by this trio is romanticism. This album holds immense appeal and affords the listeners a myriad of delights.
