CANDID JAZZ MASTERS
In the 50th anniversary year of the late Miles Davis’ first recorded solos, it seems highly appropriate to reflect on his gigantic influence on the course of jazz during that momentous half century. As a trumpeter he touched most of his contemporaries. As a bandleader, his constant moves in exciting new directions made every group alert to fresh possibilities. What Miles played today, everyone was scrambling to do tomorrow.
Miles was never satisfied to merely stand still and recycle past triumphs, but constantly evolved right up to the end of his life. Some of his shifts were controversial and not enjoyed by long standing fans, but here was a restless searched not to be denied by critical edicts.
The aptly named Candid Jazz Masters share the distinction of being leaders in their own right for the Candid label. The excellent arrangements and imaginative treatments came from within the band, assuring a thoroughly creative recital. Miles provided the structures, the soloists did the rest. ‘For Miles’ is a heartfelt tribute to one of the true Giants of Jazz, which was planned, executed and recorded shortly after Miles Davis passing on the 29th September 1991. These six younger musicians grew to maturity by Miles standards and were all, like the entire jazz community, deeply affected by his demise. It is a first class meeting of equals - seasoned unsung heroes of the contemporary jazz scene.
