Biography:

How did one of the most dynamic and respected lead trumpeters develop into a subtle and sensitive brass soloist with a bent for genuine lyricism? The fact is that the eminent Buddy Childers has always been comfortable in both these roles. But for much of his early career he was typecast as the leadman par excellence and his solo activities were put on hold until his mid thirties.

However, colleagues realised it was only a matter of time and opportunity before the soloist emerged.

Buddy Childers’ musical career began when he joined the Stan Kenton orchestra at the age of 16 where he spent most of the next eleven and a half years. He also played with the bands of Woody Herman, Tommy Dorsey, Les Brown, Benny Goodman, Marty Paich, Charlie Barnet, Benny Carter, Quincy Jones, Oliver Nelson, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Bob Florence, Count Basie and countless others.

Movies, television and recording as well as live performances with many of entertainment’s biggest starts are all part of the Buddy Childers story.

He spent almost ten years travelling with one or another of the Sinatra clan Sr. or Jr. (He was musical director and bandleader for Jr, and played lead trumpet for Sr.) Buddy then formed his own big band which played regularly in California and Nevada. His association with Candid resulted in two titles – the first with the Russ Garcia Strings and the second, with a small, handpicked group.
