At 15 Popkin picked up an alto saxophone because he heard Earl Bostic. the record that really changed Popkin's life however was prestige 7004, a collectin of early '50s tracks by Lee Konitz that featured the alto saxophonist with Tristano, Warne Marsh, Sal Masca and Billy Bauer. He says "I listened to it over and over again and couldn't believe it." At this time, 1959, Tristano appeared at the Half Note on Hudson Street. Popkin was completely taken with the group and went by the club every night, staying for all the sets.

In recent years Popkin has worked with Connie Crothers in duo and as part of a quartet that has included Eddie Gomez and Peter Scattaretico.

317 East 32rd is the impressive debut recording by this dazzling saxophonist.
